Area baseball results from Tuesday, May 14th

The Lyle/Pacelli Athletics baseball team, the No. 1 team in the state in Class A in the latest poll was looking to keep their record unblemished Tuesday in a Southeast Conference matchup with the Spring Grove Lions, and it was senior righthander Isaac Nelsen pitching a complete-game, three-hit shutout as the Athletics blanked the Lions 4-0.

The Athletics pushed across two runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 2-0 lead, and two more in the fifth to increase their lead to 4-0, and those would be all the runs Nelsen would need as he struck out seven and walked only one in the complete-game victory.  Offensively for the Athletics, three players tallied two hits apiece, including Jack Klingfus, who was 2 for 3 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored, Dane Schara was 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored, and Nelsen helped his own cause on the mound by going 2 for 4.  Isaac Small was 1 for 2 with an RBI, Landon Meyer and Logyn Brooks each tallied one hit apiece, and Grady Meyer knocked in two runs without the benefit of a hit in the win.

The Athletics are now 15-0 on the season, and the club returns to action in Adams Thursday versus the Southland Rebels in a matchup of two of the top teams in the Southeast Conference and Section 1A, with first pitch at 4:30 p.m.  You’ll hear the game live on AM 1480 KAUS, with the pregame show getting underway at 4:15 p.m.

Speaking of the Rebels, the club traveled to Houston to take on the Hurricanes in a Southeast Conference matchup Tuesday, and it was Travis Kirtz and Sam Boe combining to hold the Hurricanes to only two hits in a 10-0, 6-inning win.

The Rebels got out to a quick start offensively with five runs in the top of the first for a 5-0 lead, and they added four more runs in the fifth, and one in the sixth to win via the 10-run rule.  Kirtz helped his own cause on the pitching mound by going 2 for 4 with two RBI’s, Riley Jax went 1 for 3 with a total of four RBI’s and a stolen base, Maverick Hanna was 1 for 3 with two runs scored and a stolen base, Landon Hill went 1 for 1 with an RBI, and Gavin Nelsen was 1 for 3 with a stolen base.  Kirtz pitched the first five innings to earn the win for the Rebels as he gave up no runs on one hit, striking out five and walking two, while Boe pitched the sixth inning and gave up no runs on one hit, striking out two and walking none.

The Rebels are now 15- 1 overall on the season.

In Blooming Prairie Tuesday, the Awesome Blossoms were looking to run their current winning streak to three games in a Gopher Conference and Section 1A matchup with the Hayfield Vikings, and it was righthander Alex Lea giving up only one run in a complete-game win on the mound, plus he knocked in two runs at the plate to help lead the Blossoms to a 4-1 win.

Lea gave up just the one run, which was earned, on nine hits, striking out two and walking none in the win, and offensively for the Blossoms, Lea was 1 for 2 with two RBI’s, a run scored and a walk, Brady Kittleson went 2 for 3 with a run scored, Carsten Ingvaldson was 1 for 4 with a run scored, Carter Bishop went 1 for 3, and Cale Braaten chipped in an RBI in the win.

With the victory, the Blossoms are now 9-7 overall on the season, and the squad returns to action Friday at Siebert Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus versus United South Central, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
