An Albert Lea man who fled from law enforcement officers in Austin in June via a stolen vehicle and by swimming across Turtle Creek has been sentenced to prison time in Mower County District Court.
30-year old Trouper Montgomery Gilbertson was arrested on June 13 after Austin Police reported that he first sped away from officers in a vehicle that was reported stolen out of Albert Lea at 70 miles per hour, almost hitting a group of children. He later got out of his car and swam across Turtle Creek to escape. Gilbertson was later captured near the Twin Towers.
He pleaded guilty to charges of theft and fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle.
Gilbertson was sentenced to a term of one year and five months in prison, with credit for 160 days already served. He was also ordered to pay $4,500 in restitution.
