Austin man in custody after early morning property damage accident

An Austin man is in custody after the vehicle he was driving was involved in a property damage accident early this (Monday) morning in Northeast Austin.

Austin Police officers responded to a call concerning a property damage accident at 1:40 a.m. this (Monday) morning at the intersection of 12th Street and 5th Avenue Northeast.   A 2008 Ford Edge driven by 22-year old Matthew Bergstad of Austin jumped the curb, drove through a garden fence and sustained heavy front end damage when it struck a tree in the backyard of a residence at 600 12th Street Northeast.  Chief of Police Brian Krueger reported that officers were contacted by the towing company on the scene who told them that the driver involved in the incident was intoxicated.  Officers arrived and Bergstad failed a field sobriety test, plus a preliminary breath test and was taken into custody, where he is facing a charge of 4th degree DWI.
